Managing product categories in Growing Good.
In our platform you can create different product categories and sub categories to manage how they are organised in your storefront.
This guide will take you through the various elements when creating a product category and the relationship with your online store. It will also explore adding products to product categories enabling you to successfully sell them through your website. You can create and manage all of your product categories in the categories page in your admin. Click on the different guides below for specific guidance.

Create a Parent Category
- Go to Categories Page.
- Click ‘New category’.
- Enter details and save.
Add Categories to Storefront
- Go to Website Builder.
- Edit homepage, use the pen icon to add categories to the menu, and save.
Create a Sub Category
- Create it as a category.
- Attach to parent:
- Use ‘parent categories’ drop-down.
- Or add within the parent category and save.
Change Sub Category Order
- Drag and drop sub categories within the parent category.
- Save changes.
Storefront Appearance
- Categories in menu.
- Sub categories under parent categories.
How to create a parent category
To create a product category start by navigating to the categories page. Click ‘New category’ in the top right. This will create a new blank category. Fill in the required information and then hit ‘save’ in the top right to create the category.
You can add /change the following information on a product category:
- Name
- Subtitle
- Images (Banner and thumbnail)
- Description
- Parent category (if parent category assigned the product becomes a sub category)
- Sub categories can be added to the category
- Products in the category
Adding parent categories to your storefront
You can add categories to your storefront from within the website builder. Click ‘Edit’ next to your homepage and then click on the ‘pen icon’ on the shop menu bar. In the pop up select the product category you want to add to the menu, then click on the right arrow in the middle to move it across. Any category in the left column is not currently added to the menu, anything in the right column is already added to the menu. Once you have moved the category over to the right click ‘done’ and then save the changes.



How to create a sub category
You can use sub categories as a way of filtering or further categorising your products in your storefront. To create a sub category you first create it as a category as detailed above. There are 2 ways you can add a subcategory to an already created parent category. Firstly you can attach the sub category to a parent category by clicking on the ‘parent categories’ drop down and then selecting the parent category (shown below left). Then hit ‘save’ to confirm the changes. You can also add a sub category from within the parent category. Click the ‘add sub category’ button. This will add a category block, then select the category you want to add as a subcategory from the drop down.

You can change the order in which the sub categories appear on the page. This can be done by going to the category you want to edit. Then clicking and dragging the sub categories into the order you want them to display. Hit ‘save’ to confirm the changes.
How do categories and sub categories appear in the storefront
The below image shows the categories in the storefront website menu (top) and the sub categories ‘Veg’ and ‘Fruit’ present in the ‘Fruit & Veg’ parent category.

Adding products to a category
- Select the category from the ‘categories’ box dropdown.
- Click ‘save’.
Within the category:
- Click ‘add product’.
- Select the product from the dropdown.
- Click ‘save’.
Removing Products:
- From product: Click ‘x’ next to the category.
- From category: Click the ‘bin icon’ next to the product.
Changing Product Order:
- Drag and drop products in the category page.
- Click ‘save’.
How to add products to a category
Once a category is created you will need to add products to it for purchase through your storefront website. Here’s a handy guide on creating products, if you are yet to create your first product.
There are 2 ways you can add products to a product category or sub category:
1) From within a product Go to the product you want to attach to a category to. Go to the ‘categories’ box and click on the field. This will bring up a drop down list of all of the categories that have been created. Click on the categories you want the product to be attached to. Hit ‘save’ to confirm your changes.

2) Within the category itself
Go to the category you want to add a product to. Hit the ‘add product’ button. This will add a blank product card to the category. Click on the field labelled ‘product’ this will bring up a drop down list of products. Click on the product you want to add. Hit ‘save’ to confirm the changes.


Removing a product from a category
You can remove a product from a category in both the product and category. This means it will no longer be available to be ordered online. To remove from within the product. Click the ‘x’ next to the category in the ‘categories’ field.
To remove from within the category. Click the ‘bin icon’ next to the product you want removed from the category.
Changing the order products appear on the storefront
You can change the order of how the products appear on the front end from within the category page. You may want to move your most popular items to the top of our shop pages or want to push certain items that you are eager to sell. You can easily change the order how the products appear from within the category page. Simply click on the product and drag it to where you want it to appear. You can keep moving the products until you are happy with the order and then hit ‘save’ to confirm the changes.
Sub baskets
- Assign products to either a ‘Standard’ or ‘Sub Basket’.
- A sub basket is a secondary basket with a different minimum spend requirement.
- Products in a ‘Sub Basket’ require the sub basket's minimum spend to be met.
- Note: Contact support to set up sub basket settings before using.
- To assign a category to the sub basket, click on the basket type field and select ‘Sub Basket’
In a product category you have the option of assigning the product to a ‘Standard’ or ‘Sub Basket’. A sub basket is a secondary basket you can have added to your store front basket. This can have a different minimum spend to your main basket. Any products that are in a category that is assigned as a ‘sub basket’, when ordered by the customer will be added to this separate basket and require the minimum spend set on the sub basket to be met.
To assign a category to the sub basket, click on the basket type field and then select ‘sub basket’.
