How to create a parent category

To create a product category start by navigating to the categories page. Click ‘New category’ in the top right. This will create a new blank category. Fill in the required information and then hit ‘save’ in the top right to create the category.

You can add /change the following information on a product category:

  • Name
  • Subtitle
  • Images (Banner and thumbnail)
  • Description
  • Parent category (if parent category assigned the product becomes a sub category)
  • Sub categories can be added to the category
  • Products in the category

Adding parent categories to your storefront

You can add categories to your storefront from within the website builder. Click ‘Edit’ next to your homepage and then click on the ‘pen icon’ on the shop menu bar. In the pop up select the product category you want to add to the menu, then click on the right arrow in the middle to move it across. Any category in the left column is not currently added to the menu, anything in the right column is already added to the menu. Once you have moved the category over to the right click ‘done’ and then save the changes.

How to create a sub category

You can use sub categories as a way of filtering or further categorising your products in your storefront. To create a sub category you first create it as a category as detailed above. There are 2 ways you can add a subcategory to an already created parent category. Firstly you can attach the sub category to a parent category by clicking on the ‘parent categories’ drop down and then selecting the parent category (shown below left). Then hit ‘save’ to confirm the changes. You can also add a sub category from within the parent category. Click the ‘add sub category’ button. This will add a category block, then select the category you want to add as a subcategory from the drop down.

⚠️
It is not possible to have a sub category within a sub category. This will cause an error in showing them in the storefront. Stick to the hierarchy of a ‘parent category’ which can have multiple ‘sub categories’.

Changing the order in which the ‘sub categories’ appear.

You can change the order in which the sub categories appear on the page. This can be done by going to the category you want to edit. Then clicking and dragging the sub categories into the order you want them to display. Hit ‘save’ to confirm the changes.

How do categories and sub categories appear in the storefront

The below image shows the categories in the storefront website menu (top) and the sub categories ‘Veg’ and ‘Fruit’ present in the ‘Fruit & Veg’ parent category.
